MY PHOTOGRAPHY IS JUST AS MUCH AN EXPRESSION OF HOW I SEE THE WORLD AS IT IS OF THE SUBJECT MATTER THAT I PHOTOGRAPH

The Art of Noticing

My journey as an observer began long before I picked up a camera. My father was the first person to teach me to slow down, look closely, and understand the world around me — to notice the small details, quiet moments, and stories unfolding in everyday life. One of the greatest gifts my father gave me wasn't a camera—it was a way of seeing. He believed that observation is life's greatest teacher and that we can learn as much from watching the world as from living through it ourselves. That philosophy has shaped how I photograph. I look for the quiet moments, the genuine connections, the beauty hidden in ordinary places, and the stories that often go unnoticed. Every photograph is an invitation to slow down, observe, and discover something meaningful.

My earliest photography began through travel. Exploring new places sparked my curiosity about people, cultures, and the unique stories found in different corners of the world. Through my lens, I found myself drawn not only to beautiful destinations, but to the moments that reveal the character of a place — the people, the interactions, and the emotions that make each location memorable.

That curiosity became even more meaningful after becoming a parent. Inspired by the wonder of new beginnings and the fleeting moments of early childhood, I began photographing families and newborns. This chapter of  my work focused on preserving the connections, love, and quiet emotions that define family stories. My portrait and newborn photography has been recognized through awards and publication features, reflecting my passion for storytelling, emotion, and creating timeless images.

My training as a physician further shaped the way I see the world. Medicine taught me the importance of observation, empathy, and understanding the unique stories carried by every person. Whether caring for a patient or creating an image, I am drawn to the moments that reveal connection, resilience, and humanity.

Today, my photography has evolved into street photography — a natural convergence of my earliest love of travel and my years of documenting human connection. Through MKP Photography, I explore the stories we walk past: the rhythm of cities, the beauty of light and shadow, unexpected reflections, and the fleeting moments of everyday life that often disappear before we notice them. My father taught me that observation is life's greatest teacher. Every time I pick up my camera, I'm reminded that the world still has something new to teach me.

My work is guided by a simple belief:

Every person has a story. Every place holds a moment. Every photograph begins with noticing.

Cheers,

Sowmya
